Beijing's Future Science City (FSC), located in its northern Changping District, is gearing up to develop itself into a smart city.

The FSC, launched in 2009, has now taken shape, with 70 percent of its main infrastructure having been completed. The main roads, a total of more than 50, will be opened to traffic as of late this year.

The construction of the smart city, which features the application of IT and other intelligent technologies, is well on track to be completed by the end of 2015. All buildings located inside the FSC, which has a planned area of about ten square kilometers, will meet "green building"standards, and renewable energy utilization will reach a full 100 percent.

Known as one of the first pilot smart cities in China, the people-oriented FSC focuses on innovation, openness, low-carbon and symbiosis.

15 enterprises, including Shenhua Group and China Guodian Corp., have settled in the FSC so far. A total of 136 overseas high-level talents -- including experts from the United States, Germany and Australia in fields such as those of electronic information, new energy and new materials -- have been introduced.

Changping enjoys great strengths in sustainable development due to its advantageous geographical location, as well as its strong talent pool backed by dozens of higher education institutions and more than 100 research centers. Located adjacent to Zhongguancun Science Park (Z-Park), China's innovation hub, the district is a magnet to innovation-focused enterprises and talented personnel. It has created a more favorable investment environment thanks to the local government's support in policy.
