A video of a surprisingly articulate Beijing street cleaner speaking fluent English has became a hit online, according to local media.

Li Jing'ang, a street cleaner working near the city's popular Nanluoguxiang area.

In the video, Li Jing'ang, a street cleaner working near the city's popular Nanluoguxiang area, talked confidently in English during a street interview. Showing a rich vocabulary, Li said he had read Shakespeare's "Hamlet," "Romeo and Juliet" and "Macbeth," and also talked about cultural communication between China and other countries.

The Beijing News said the video was made by a young man who marvelled at Li's ability to give directions to two Swedish tourists during the recent National Holiday.

The Beijing Morning Post reported that Li had retired from teaching English at a high school in Shandong province and came to Beijing for a tour in September. Fascinated by the cultural environment here, Li decided to stay and work as a street cleaner.

Residents in the area all know Li and praised him for being kind-hearted. They said Li also volunteers to teach those interested in English, including waiters at nearby restaurants.

Li said his wife wanted him to go back, and that many students in his hometown miss him.
