Beijing will add at least 10 recreational parks in 2016, the Municipal Bureau of Landscape and Forestry said Wednesday.

The city will have an extra 400 hectares of green space by the end of the year, and half of that area will be public parks, a spokesperson said.

The parks will be located near residential areas or other densely populated parts of the city, which has a population of 21 million.

Authorities are also planning more greenery in residential compounds and to cover more roofs with plants, the spokesperson said.

The Beijing government is aiming for a forest coverage rate of 42 percent in 2016 and 44 percent by 2020.

Last summer, the Bureau of Landscape and Forestry said Beijing would get another 2,300 hectares of green space in the next five years and that 85 percent of citizens would be able to access a park within 500 meters of their home.
